CAPTAIN RALPH CREWE
Sara's widowed father. He married a Frenchwoman, and she gave birth to their only daughter, Sara. She gave everything Sara ever wanted and needed. He got into business with Mr. Carrisford, but then he died because of Brain Fever. He did not leave anything for Sara, causing Miss Minchin to be angry and make his daughter a slave.
"Captain Crewe was a rash, innocent, young man, and wanted his little girl to have everything she admired and everything he admired himself, so between them they collected a wardrobe much too grand for a child of seven." (Chapter 1, Sara)

She is the owner of the seminary for girls in London. She is the older sister of Miss Amelia. "Sara often thought afterwards that the house was somehow exactly like Miss Minchin. It was respectable and well furnished, but everything in it was ugly." (Chapter 1, Sara)
"She was very like her house, Sara felt: tall and dull, and respectable and ugly. She had large, cold, fishy eyes, and large, cold, fishy smile." (Chapter 1, Sara)
She is very greedy and she is also strict. She made Sara a slave after she learned that Capt. Crewe died.
"And it serves us right; but it serves you right more than it does me, for you are a hard woman, Maria Minchin- you're a hard, selfish, worldly woman!" (Chapter 18, I Tried Not To Be)

EMILY
Emily is Sara's doll. At the first chapter of the novel. Sara was very eager to find a perfect doll- a human-like doll. A doll that can show emotions and a doll that can make Sara comfortable. Sara and her father searched the best toy shops in London, and finally she found Emily. "She is a doll I haven't got yet... She is a doll papa is going to buy for me. We are going out together to find her. I have called her Emily. She is going to be my friend when papa is gone. I want her to talk to about him." (Chapter 1, Sara) In the latter part of the novel, Sara lost faith in her doll, but gained it back immediately. "You are nothing but a doll!... Nothing but a doll- doll- doll! You care for nothing. You are stuffed with sawdust. You never had a heart. Nothing could ever make you feel. You are a doll!" (Chapter 10, The Indian Gentleman)

MELCHISEDEC
Melchisedec is a father rat that lives in a mouse hole in the right hand attic. He, together with a sparrow, served as Sara's companions throughout her stay in the attic. At first, Ermengarde and Lottie were afraid of him as he was a little rat, but they learned to love him gradually. He was a trustworthy friend of Sara's and Sara served as his blanket of security in return.
"A large rat was sitting up on his hind-quarters and sniffing the air in an interested manner. Some of Lottie's crumbs had dropped upon the floor and their scent had drawn him out of his hole. He looked so queer and so like a grey-whiskered dwarf or gnome that Sara was rather fascinated. He looked at her with his bright eyes, as if he were asking a question. He was evidently so doubtful that one of the child's queer thoughts came into her mind." (Chapter 9, Melchisedec)
