Sara Crewe was the only daughter of Captain Ralph Crewe. She was born in India and she grew up getting everything she ever admired and wanted. She is a clever girl and she acts very mature for her age. She sees the good in people and always stands up for what is right.
When she was seven, her father sent her to Miss Minchin's Select Seminary for Girls in London because the weather in India is not good for children. Her father received a lot of good comments about the school so he decided that it would be best fro his little princess to go there.
Sara was the best pupil in school and everyone looks up to her- everyone except Lavinia. Lavinia is very jealous of Sara because she overpowered her. Sara is also a lot better than her in terms of attitude. Sara is also wealthier than her. But despite Lavinia, Sara remained happy because she met the best people in the world- people who made her feel like family. Ermengarde, Lottie, and Becky remained loyal to Sara. They were there for her through ups and downs.
Our princess here is very blessed with the best things is life but everything has it's end. During Sara's birthday, a very devastating news came to her. Captain Crewe died of Brain Fever and there's one thing that can make it even worse- he did not leave anything for her little girl. This enraged Miss Minchin and made Sara a maid. She made Sara do things a princess wouldn't do. She made her do errands, teach the little kids, and clean the seminary. There are also days when she wouldn;t let Sara eat anything. Her life is indeed horrible. Not even the most imaginative person could see Sara, a kind, loving, and understanding her, as a maid. But despite all of that, Sara remained optimistic. She keeps on thinking that one day, all of these will end.
One day, while Sara is running errands, she met a family; the Large family. Sara admired them. She will always feel happy whenever she sees them. She finally met Donald, one of the members if the Large family. The little boy gave her a sixpence and she made it her necklace. It will always remind her of the kindness of the young boy.
Sara also has a generous and giving heart. While walking down the streets if London, she found a fourpence. Being the honest and kind girl that she is, she asked the nearby bakery if they lost a fourpence. The baker woman admired her honesty so she gave Sara four loaves of bread but seeing that she is really hungry, the baker woman gave her another two. On the way out, Sara saw a beggar- Anne. She gave five of her loaves to her. The baker woman saw all of these and she decided to adopt Anne.
When Sara arrived home, she saw a carriage filled with ornaments and furniture. She assumed that the person was Indian. She met Ram Dass, an Indian lascar, and he grew fonder and fonder of Sara everyday. He decided to ask Mister Carrissford, the Indian Gentleman, if he could give Sara all her necessities. Sara was delighted because she knew that someone cares about her.
When Ram Dass' monkey got lost, Sara found it leading her to Mr. Carrisford. They started asking her questions and later, they found out that Sara is the lost girl. At first, Sara was shocked and angry because she thought that Carrisford was the enemy. But Mrs. Carmichael, the mother of the Large family, explained to Sara that Mr. Carrisford also suffered Brain Fever and only found out about Captain Crewe's death when it's too late. She explained that they kept on searching for the girl, and that he intended to give her all the riches she deserve.
Sara shared her blessings to other people. She took Becky with her and visited Anne in the bakery. She fed the poor. She lived like a princess and acted like a princess.
Sara is a proof that a woman doesn't need to have extravagant clothes or overflowing riches just to be a princess. She taught girls that thinking that you're a princess and acting like one is more important than looking like one.
Sara taught us that optimism is the best way to face your problems. Yes, she thought of giving up, but she got up on her feet and thought of the people who gave her strength. She inspires a lot of people. Together with Sara and Frances Hodgson Burnett, I hope Sara's story made you think and gave you strength to carry on. Remember that even when things fail, there are a lot of people who will pick you up and help you through.
“Somehow, something always happens just before things get to the very worst. It is as if magic did it. If I could only just remember that always. The worse thing never quite comes.”
